Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

common applications:

A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electrical energy using any number of battery chemistries. Renewable energy installations use large form factory BESS that present unique manufacturing challenges given the weight and size.

Large-scale BESS are being implemented as part of utility substations, transmission systems, and solar and wind generation projects. Smaller battery systems frequently appear in behind-the-meter applications in association with rooftop solar.

  • Process conveyance using high capacity AGVs

  • Gantries & pick-and-place (PNP) robots coupled with vision systems for loading

  • Process buffers and conveyance

  • Ergonomic lift assists for handling modules and packs

  • Adhesive and dispense applications

  • Ovens & curing processes

  • Electrical test systems & inspection

  • Robotic welding and machine tending

Grid Infrastructure

Significant investment is underway in our nation’s electrical grid and power infrastructure. Nationwide, the grid draws power from about 12,000 power plants. Over the next 20 years, this number will balloon to incorporate millions of small, distributed energy-generation resources, from hydropower dams to offshore wind farms to rooftop solar panels. Invio seeks to partner with manufacturers producing the next generation of grid equipment.

Common Applications
  • AMR conveyance lines for switch and transformer assembly

  • Ergonomic lift devices and secure tools for manufacturing electrical cabinets

  • Automated conveyor-based process for circuit breaker assembly and testing

  • Automated voltage, thermal, and functional test equipment

Wind

The U.S. wind market has grown substantially over the years into an increasingly complex supply chain. There are more than 500 U.S. manufacturing facilities specializing in wind components such as blades, towers, and generators, as well as turbine assembly across the country.

Advancements in composite materials, automation, and more efficient manufacturing processes have helped domestic manufacturers dramatically increase productivity throughout the past decade.

As the size and complexity of wind turbines grow, so do the manufacturing process requirements and component transportation costs which, in turn, increase the need for local manufacturers who can overcome technical and logistical challenges. Currently, the average utility-scale wind turbine contains roughly 8,000 parts, including blades up to 100 meters (over 300 feet) in length and towers around 94 meters (308 feet) high

Common Applications
  • Build fixtures for wind blades

  • Machining fixtures for gearboxes

  • Heavyweight AMR / AGV transportation

  • Mobile robots for sanding and NDT

  • Ergonomic lift assists, operator tools, and sub-assembly stations
